Hot Long Term Stocks To Invest In 2014

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of PolyOne (NYSE: POL  ) jumped 10% today after the company reported earnings.

So what: First quarter revenue was up 7.5% to $801.1 million and adjusted earnings per share rose 29% to $0.31. Analysts expected higher revenue of $817.1 million but only $0.26 in earnings per share so the bottom line is what investors are excited about today. �

Now what: The specialty business drove earnings on a 34.4 increase in operating income. There is clearly a lot of momentum in the business because this is the 14th consecutive quarter of double-digit, adjusted-earnings-per-share growth. The stock trades at just 14 times forward estimates, which is an attractive price considering the continued growth and I think shares can move higher long term.

    Concerns about the political uncertainty in Ukraine caused some volatility in the markets Friday afternoon, with the major indexes making several U-turns ahead of the weekend. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI), which had been up by as much as 125 points, briefly dropped into loss territory before rebounding to end 49 points higher. The Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) edged up 5 points, adding to Thursday's record high, but the Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) lost 10 points. AP/Darko VojinovicPro-Russian militias have seized local government buildings in Crimea, Ukraine; the unrest there is making investors around the world nervous. February was a great month for investors. All three major averages jumped by about 4 percent. UnitedHealth Group (UNH) led the blue chips, gaining 1½ percent. Other health providers – Aetna (AET), Wellpoint (WLP), Cigna (CI) and Humana (HUM) -- all gained between 1½ and 2 percent. And retail stocks remained active. Target (TGT) added another 3 percent. Best Buy rose 4 percent, and Fred's (FRED), a regional department store chain, jumped 10 percent. But Pier 1 (PIR) fell 5½ percent after lowering its earnings outlook for a second time. That led to a series of brokerage downgrades. Decker Outdoor (DECK) tumbled 12 percent. The maker of footwear brands such as Ugg and Teva issued a weak outlook. And apparel maker Lululemon (LULU) fell 5-percent on negative comments from Credit Suisse. It seems as though there are always some big movers in the drug and biotech sectors – and that was certainly the case today. Once you go down the rabbit hole of the government determining what's "natural" and what's not, it's hard to get back out, but food and beverage companies like PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP  ) may need it to do so since plaintiff's attorneys seem determined to wring cash out of them for dubious violations of labeling laws.

Pepsi's Naked Juice brand recently agreed to settle for $9 million a class action lawsuit that the claims of "natural" made on its bottles were misleading or false because they�contained unnaturally processed and synthetic ingredients. They were also charged with using genetically modified ingredients.

As readers may know, I'm a proponent of GMO labeling because I believe that when an organism is being manipulated in the lab and being released into the food chain, consumers ought to know they're ingesting that. Yet while I might not be big supporter of GMO crops, I wouldn't stop Monsanto (NYSE: MON  ) or Syngenta from developing their seeds. I just want to know if what I'm eating or drinking contains their Frankenfood strains.

    Not everyone is thrilled that Sears (SHLD) plans to spin off its Lands��End business.

    The stock hasn�� moved much, falling 0.8% to trade at $50.25 in afternoon market action.

    But Credit Suisse analysts Gary Balter, Simeon Gutman and Andrew Kinder argue that the move hurts the value of Sears and shows that the retailer was unable to find a buyer for the asset.

    In a note published Friday, the Credit Suisse trio writes:

    Lands’ End�� numbers are surprisingly weak, with EBITDA having declined by 50% in a two-year period; a period where JCP was donating apparel share and one would have expected stronger results from Lands’ End. EBITDA fell from over $200 million in 2010 to $107 million in 2012, well below the performance of what would be viewed as comparable companies in apparel.

    That said, Lands��End is probably the most profitable business Sears has left, and its spinoff will add $100 million to the company�� EBITDA loss projections. Balter and his colleagues write:

    While not clear in the filing, we assume that Lands’ End will take on some debt in their capital structure and possibly pay a dividend back to the parent. However, given the valuation of the total company, we believe losing this EBITDA will be much more material to the parent than any dividend.

Corning had grown into the world's largest fiber-optics manufacturer, ahead of second-place Lucent and third-place Alcatel, which merged in 2006 to become Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU  ) ; the combined stock chart for these companies shows a double from 1998 to early 2000. Millions of miles of fiber-optic cabling now crisscross the globe, but that hasn't helped either Corning or Alcatel-Lucent. The two largest fiber-optic manufacturers have suffered respective share-price declines of 70% and more than 90% since their peaks. Sometimes technological progress can be so fast that even its largest proponents lose out -- at least for a while.

Mobile Phones

Other additions to the Company�� portfolio included the Nokia C3 Touch & Type, a stainless steel device, which also combines the touch screen and traditional phone keypad, and the Nokia 2690, memory card slot, and which gives access to Ovi Mail and features an FM radio and video graphics array (VGA) camera. It is also incorporating some of the software features and related services popular in its smartphones into the Series 40-based mobile phones. The applications using NAVTEQ�� map database include points of interest locators, mobile directory assistance services, emergency response systems and vehicle-based telematics services. Geographic information systems render geographic representations of information and assets for management analysis and decision making.     InterDigital lost 7% after a judge ruled that Nokia (NYSE: NOK  ) and China's ZTE had not infringed on wireless-transmission technology patented by InterDigital. InterDigital CEO William Merritt issued a statement after the decision, disagreeing with the decision, but suggesting that an appeal to federal appellate court might yield a better result in the long run. InterDigital has generally been successful in getting many companies to license its technology, with an agreement last week with Samsung having led InterDigital to revise its second-quarter revenue guidance upward. Investors send billions to Shanghai as market opens to foreigners

Invest in China: Stock Connect explained   Invest in China: Stock Connect explained HONG KONG (CNNMoney) International investors poured money into Chinese stocks on Monday, taking advantage of a new program that links markets in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Previously, only pre-approved institutional investors could invest in the Chinese market. But now, the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect allows any investor to buy select Shanghai stocks through the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, and vice versa, with trading in both directions subject to daily trading caps.

International investors buying Chinese stocks reached the daily cap of 13 billion yuan ($2.1 billion) by roughly 2 p.m., according to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Chinese investors buying Hong Kong stocks are far less enthused about the new program, said Michael Liang, chief investment officer of Foundation Asset Management.

That's because many Chinese stocks traded in Hong Kong -- big banks, insurers, oil companies -- are already listed in Shanghai, and available to Chinese investors. Plus, they're often cheaper in Shanghai versus Hong Kong.

"There's no reason to come to Hong Kong for this," Liang said. "But there are some value plays, some growth stories here -- very unique, like Tencent, AIA, Hong Kong Exchange -- which we don't have in China."

Regardless of trading volume, the program is a step in the right direction for opening up China's financial markets, and for making the yuan a global currency, he said. But "people should not expect to make a lot of money, a killing overnight."

Stocks in both cities clocked a muted response: Markets in Hong Kong fell 0.9% on Monday, while stocks in Shanghai swung between gains and losses.

The stock connect, first announced in April, was expected to launch in October -- but the launch date was delayed as regulators hashed out final details.

Purchases of Chinese stocks through Hong Kong are subject to a daily trading cap of 13 billion yuan ($2.1 billion) and a total program limit of 300 billion yuan ($48.9 billion); investing in Hong Kong is limited to 10.5 billion yuan ($1.7 billion) a day and 250 billion yuan ($40.8 billion) overall.

Almost 600 companies traded in Shanghai have been approved for the pilot program, and nearly 300 for trading in Hong Kong.

For now, participating investors can only buy and sell shares within the program. Going forward, Liang expects China to consider expanding the list of eligible companies, relaxing the quota, and perhaps rolling out! the trading link to other exchanges, such as Shenzhen.

Morgan Stanley boosted its price estimate on Magnit�� global depositary receipts by 23 percent, reiterating a buy rating, a day after Goldman Sachs said a turnaround in the management of X5 Retail Group NV (FIVE), Russia�� second-largest retailer, will boost competition for the No.1 supermarket chain. Magnit said on Oct. 28 that profit margin rose to a record high while X5�� third-quarter revenue fell short of analysts estimates.

Under its firefighting contracts, aircraft are deployed to locations prone to seasonal fires and remain on standby throughout the fire season. Aircrane is engaged in timber operations in a number of regions, including the United States, Canada, and the tropical forests in Malaysia. Its customers uses its harvesting solutions primarily for timber, such as tropical hardwoods and for remote area harvesting in locations that would otherwise require road construction or prohibit ground-based harvesting. Timber is vertically lifted and transported with its hydraulic grapple.

The Aircrane's rear load-facing pilot seat makes the aircraft particularly for infrastructure projects that require extreme precision in load delivery, such as electricity transmission and broadcasting towers, oil and gas pipelines, wind turbines, mining conveying systems, industrial equipment, emergency shelters, and ski-lift equipment. The Aircrane can be configured to transport heavy machinery and equipment, such as heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) units, automotive equipment, and other cargo items.

Aircraft Manufacturing and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (Manufacturing/MRO)

The Company manufactures Aircranes and related components for sale to government and commercial customers and provide aftermarket support and maintenance, repair, and overhaul services for the Aircrane and oth! er aircra! ft. It also offers cost per hour (CPH) contracts pursuant to which it provides components and expendable supplies for a customer's aircraft at a fixed cost per flight hour. Through its Manufacturing / MRO segment it manufactures Aircranes from existing airframes, manufacture components on a contract basis, and provide customers with FAA- and European Aviation Safety Agency-certified MRO services
