It seems that the financial press has warmed to the idea that investing in the kind of dividend-paying value stocks we favor at The Prudent Speculator is not a bad idea. With many heretofore high-flying, richly priced stocks having fallen back to earth, it was nice to see The Wall Street Journal penning columns over the last few days entitled Value Stocks Head Higher as Growth Companies Look Pricy and More Investors Are Drawn to Dividends, especially as we just released an updated version of our Value of Dividends Special Report last month.
While momentum and growth stocks often have the more exciting stories, and the more expensive price tags, we think it important to remember the words of the father of value investing Benjamin Graham: hen shopping for stocks, choose them the way you would buy groceries, not the way you would buy perfume.Having the potential for market-beating returns should be all the excitement that long-term-oriented investors need.
Indeed, wel take a portfolio consisting of oringundervalued, dividend paying stocks over tight-rope-walking biotech, social media or electric car names. And the beautiful thing is, history supports our assertion. The table below shows the long-term annual returns and standard deviations of a range of asset classes over the last 88 years, and clearly Value and Dividend-paying stocks are the long-term winners.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By David Kerr]
On July 28, Dollar Tree (DLTR) announced that it will be buying rival Family Dollar for a total of $9.2 billion (including debt). Icahn had originally suggested that Family Dollar be bought out by leader Dollar General, but shortly after stated that the recent announcement of the retirement of Dollar General CEO would cause disruptions in his plan of merging the two companies. The announced deal gives Dollar Tree over 13,000 stores in the 48 states and Canada, as well as more than $18 billion in sales. This pushes Dollar Tree above and beyond major rival Dollar General, which last year had $17.5 billion in sales and 11,338 current locations. There has also been much talk about the impact this merger will have on the giant Wal-Mart (WMT), which generally focuses on low-income consumers by offering more items for under $1.

Many oil and natural gas service companies called the fourth quarter of 2012 a trough in the North American market. By all accounts so far during this reporting period, that appears to be especially prescient. International heavyweights Halliburton (NYSE: HAL ) and Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB ) both witnessed signs that a second half turnaround us likely upon them and the industry as a whole.

About 1% of all drilling operations are powered by natural gas. By shifting all drilling operations over to natural gas, the industry could save as much as $1.6 billion a year. The idea has such appeal that both Haliburton (NYSE: HAL ) and Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB ) have said that they would be willing to test sites with Apache for free. In this video, Fool.com contributor Tyler Crowe talks about how the industry could convert to natural-gas-powered operations, and highlights companies to look out for that could benefit from this movement.

The consumption of oil worldwide isn't goinganywhere anytime soon, so the activities of oil companies in these areas must increase as more conventional fields steadily decline. As the oil companies steadily increase their activities in the offshore space, particularly in ultra-deepwater areas, contractors will be forced to construct more rigs. They will thus require equipment produced by National Oilwell Varco and its peers Cameron International (NYSE: CAM ) and Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB ) .

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Ben Levisohn]
For one day at least, this CAT is not a dog.
Caterpillar (CAT) has gained 2% to $86.22 today, its largest gain since in a month and the largest gain among the Dow components. The machinery manufacturer has dropped 11% during the past six months, however, as a slowdown in China and cost-cutting at mining companies have hit its shares.
BloombergSusquehanna’s Ted Grace offers reasons for optimism, even as he lowers his 12-month price target to $97 from $104:
CAT remains Positive rated with 15% upside to our $97 price target and upside-downside of 1.2-to-1 (which, like most of our machinery names, is admittedly shy of the 2-to-1 or better ratio we prefer). Despite our 2014-15 EPS being ~6% below consensus, we view our updated estimates as closer to buyside expectations while noting that consensus appears to embed a low tax rate that explains over half of the variance. While there remains plenty of uncertainty on 2014/15, particularly in mining, we believe CAT shares currently discount reasonable top-line expectations while recent meetings with mgmt suggest potential for structural cost savings that could drive better than expected margins/ incrementals. While difficult to identify discernible catalysts, if CAT’s framework for flat-to-better RI revenue growth in 2014 proves correct (admittedly not assumed in our estimates), this would almost certainly debunk the core of the bear thesis and be meaningfully positive for shares.
Investors waiting for the stock to actually, you know, rise can take comfort in Caterpillar’s $2.40 dividend per share and its more than $3 per share in buybacks in 2013, Grace says.
Caterpillar’s 2% gain has trumped the Dow Jones Industrial Average’s 0.04% rise, and United Technology’s (UTX) 0.1% drop, while competitor Deere (DE) has gained 1.9% to $83.22.

Department of Defense contract officers on Tuesday announced a total of 13 contract awards worth more than $1 billion in aggregate. Notable winners among publicly traded companies included several Army contract awards, including:
Britain's BAE Systems' (NASDAQOTH: BAESY ) Land and Armaments division won a $28.7 million modification to a previously awarded contract to supply M88A2 heavy equipment recovery combat utility lift and evacuation system vehicles to the U.S. Army. Work on the contract should be complete by March 31, 2014. Raytheon's (NYSE: RTN ) Thales Raytheon Systems joint venture was awarded a $23.1 million modification to a previously awarded contract to supply Sentinel Mode 5 Identification Friend or Foe kits, and spares, to the Army. Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) , while not ordinarily considered a defense contactor, seems particularly well-suited for the contract it won -- a $10.8 million award to support Army Deployable Universal Combat Earthmover vehicles. Called "DEUCE" for short, these are essentially Army tractors, and so far the Army has ordered $67.1 million of them from Caterpillar under this contract. In addition to the new awards, the Pentagon also issued contract modifications to both BAE and to General Dynamics (NYSE: GD ) on a pair of contracts to the effect that both firms are being given an additional six months to develop new prototype ground combat vehicles that the Army is considering as replacementsfor its existing armored personnel carrier fleet. The value of GD's development contract on this project is said to have a maximum value of $180.4 million, while BAE's development contract maxes out at $159.5 million.
