    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Wright Medical Group (Nasdaq: WMGI  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Wright Medical Group doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, pretty well. Trailing-12-month revenue decreased 5.3%, and inventory decreased 10.1%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks decent. Revenue shrank 5.0%, and inventory shrank 10.1%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks OK but not great. Revenue dropped 2.5%, and inventory grew 0.4%.

There been lot of talks about a possible Sprint (S) and T-Mobile (TMUS) merger. Where the relation between the two U.S. telecom giants headed remains a question. Would they continue to be compatriots or join forces together to make a new third entity in the wireless arena? Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son has been quite keen on T-Mobile.

  • [By Alyce Lomax]

Skoll Foundation's President and CEO Sally Osberg referenced Drucker's quote above while chatting to Sprint (NYSE: S  ) CEO Dan Hesse about the wireless industry and its role in the future, particularly in sustainability.

  • [By Evan Niu, CFA]

Sprint Nextel's (NYSE: S  ) prepaid Virgin Mobile subsidiary does the same thing. Virgin Mobile doesn't currently offer the newest iPhone 5, but pricing for the older iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S models implies a $100 promotional subsidy, again for a carrier with no contracts. Unlike Leap, Sprint actually appears to be ahead of schedule with its own iPhone obligations.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Maxfield]

"Nepotism has never been unknown in American banking," Martin Mayer wrote in The Greatest-Ever Bank Robbery, his 1990 book about the savings-and-loan crisis. While Mayer was referring to American Continental, the notoriously corrupt holding company run into the ground by the infamous Charles Keating in the 1980s, his point rings true today in the case of Annaly Capital Management (NYSE: NLY  ) and its publicly traded portfolio company Chimera Investment (NYSE: CIM  ) .

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Berkshire isn't the only company where book value plays an important role. In the mortgage REIT realm, the value of the investment portfolio for a given mortgage REIT reduced by the REIT's outstanding debt, sometimes referred to as net asset value rather than book value, gives valuable information about its relative valuation. Industry leader Annaly Capital (NYSE: NLY  ) currently sports a price-to-book ratio of 0.96 based on its most recently provided figures, reflecting in part investor skepticism about whether the REIT's agency-issued mortgage-backed securities will hold their value once the Federal Reserve stops making extensive bond purchases as part of its quantitative easing program. By contrast, Annaly's non-agency-issued counterpart, Chimera Investment (NYSE: CIM  ) , sports a price-to-book ratio of nearly 1.1, indicating a significant premium to the REIT's stated net asset value that could be due to the fact that the Fed hasn't focused its efforts on the alternative securities that Chimera tends to choose for its portfolio.
