Google (NASDAQ: GOOG ) and Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) have cornered the mobile operating system market, but let's not assume that it's just BlackBerry (NASDAQ: BBRY ) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT ) fighting to be the distant third place finisher.
The Wall Street Journal's "Next In Tech" column went over the many platforms shooting for the bronze medal.
Leading handset makers Huawei, LG, and ZTE are embracing Mozilla's Firefox OS as an open-source alternative to Android with phones available through many major carriers later this year. Tizen -- the platform developed by Samsung and Intel-- will have its first smartphone unveiled next quarter. Don't underestimate Tizen. Samsung is the world's largest smartphone maker, and Intel is still a potent tastemaker in tech. Remember Ubuntu, the Linux-based operating system that powered some cheap netbooks? Well, London's Canonical plans to introduce a smartphone operating system based on Ubuntu early next year. The odds are long for all of these players. The main reason why consumers have flocked to Google's Android and Apple's iOS is because they have the developer app support that smaller platforms lack. Microsoft has had to pay up to get some popular apps on its platform, and there are still some glaring omissions in the BlackBerry 10 camp. If Microsoft and BlackBerry have struggled to get developers of hot applications to port their programs over, why would Firefox, Tizen, or Ubuntu fare any better?

Kroger stock compares well with competitors, as well. Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFM ) might have fatter profit margins, for example, but both its current and forward P/E ratios are above its five-year average of 28. Whole Foods may be the go-to grocer for organic fare, but Kroger is increasingly offering organic items, as is even Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT ) . Meanwhile, Wal-Mart's current P/E is a bit above its 14.5 five-year average and its forward P/E a bit below. Its dividend, recently yielding 2.4%, has been growing faster, though, at a 15% average over the past five years. Wal-Mart's revenue has been growing more slowly than Kroger's.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Travis Hoium]
Travelers (NYSE: TRV ) is up 2.1% after its first-quarter net income rose 11% to $896 million. On a per-share basis, that's $2.33 -- well above the $2.02 average estimate from analysts. The company is increasing premiums on customers to offset more frequent natural disasters and low interest rates, and the effects are now showing up on the bottom line. It doesn't hurt that catastrophe costs -- a figure that can turn at the drop of a hat -- were down 45% to $65 million this quarter. Overall, Travelers' strategy is working, and investors are buying the strong quarter today.

There are a number of ways to invest successfully. I have friends who are very successful value investors. Most of their returns are earned through capital appreciation. They spend a great deal of time pouring through 10-Ks and 10-Qs of companies off the beaten path. The potential returns are high, but so is the effort put in their craft. At the other extreme there are successful traders. They look at their charts to determine entry and exit points for the day's transactions. Little to no time is spent analyzing the underlying fundamentals of the company since it likely will only be held for a very short period of time. I would put investors in dividend growth stocks somewhere between these two, but much closer to the pure value investor. Like the value investors, our time-frame is long term. Although we carefully research potential companies, our emphasis leans more toward fundamental metrics needed to sustain annual dividend growth, with less emphasis on current value. There are successful investors in each of the above groups, and they share a common trait. This trait is found in most all successful people t is their secret to success. Fortunately, this trait can be learned and mastered. The secret to successful investing is... discipline. A person that moves from one investment strategy to another lacks the discipline to be successful. Very few people are born with the raw intellect that allows them to just pick winning stocks out of the air. For the rest of us, we have to rely on our discipline to do what's necessary to identify stocks that will provide us with our best opportunity to succeed, and we have to remain focused on quality over the long-term. Our portfolios include stocks like:Emerson Electric Co.
