Shares of Rockwell Collins (COL) have rebounded today after selling off yesterday on news that it would make a billion dollar acquisition.

Yesterday, Rockwell Collins said it would purchase Arinc from the Carlyle Group for $1.4 billion, as the U.S. defense company seeks to bolster its air communications business. Rockwell’s stock fell 1.5% yesterday on the news.

Sterne Agee, however, came out in support of the deal today. Analysts Peter Arment and Josh Sullivan note that the deal, while expensive, will go a long way towards boosting the company’s aerospace business in the years to come. They write:

The purchase price of $1.4 billion results in an estimated transaction multiple of ~12x-13x 2013 EBITDA, which is at the very high end of the range of transaction multiples for aerospace M&A deals. Prepregs are manufactured by combining reinforcement fabrics or unidirectional fibers with a resin matrix to form a composite material with structural properties not present in either of the constituent materials. Reinforcement fabrics used in the manufacture of prepregs include glass, carbon, aramid, quartz, ceramic and other specialty reinforcements. Resin matrices include bismaleimide, cyanate ester, epoxy, phenolic, polyester, polyimide and other specialty resins.

Other fiber reinforced matrix developments include HexMC, a form of quasi-isotropic carbon fiber prepreg that enables small to medium sized composite components to be mass produced. HexTOOL is a specialized form of HexMC for use in the construction of high temperature composite tooling. HexWeb honeycomb is a cellular structure consisting of nested hexagonal cells. The product is similar in appearance to a cross-sectional slice of a beehive. It can also be manufactured in asymmetric cell configurations for more specialized applications. Honeycomb is primarily used as a lightweight core material and acts as an energy absorber. When sandwiched between composite or metallic facing skins, honeycomb increases the stiffness of the structure, while adding very little weight. The Company produces honeycomb from a number of metallic and non-metallic materials. Its metallic honeycomb is made from aluminum and is available in a selection of alloys, cell sizes and dimensions. Non-metallic materials used in the manufacture of honeycomb include fiberglass, carbon fiber, thermoplastics, non-flammable aramid papers, aramid fiber and other specialty materials.   The aerospace industry has received another blow with the crash of an Eurocopter AS350 in Seattle, on March 18. However, the episode had no repercussions on the stock market. As a matter of fact, Eurcopter�� parent company, Airbus Group (EADSY), saw a sudden stock price increment. This counter intuitive phenomenon has many explanations. Most interestingly, it seems to point at a certain weakness on the part of competitors. In other words, competitors are expected to acquire an advantage from each other�� mishaps. This particular incident challenges common knowledge and offers a good excuse to see what and how are Airbus Group�� competitors performing. In this opportunity, I would like to take a look at Textron (TXT).

  The KC-46 won't take over Boeing's defense division by itself -- not when the segment already earned more than $32.6 billion last year. However, the Air Force's need and the KC-46's strong developmental showing so far anchor the program as a foundation of the future and safeguard this stock against budget cut-related hits, should the KC-46 successfully progress to production and delivery. Also, the craft is another hit against Boeing's chief rival, EADS (NASDAQOTH: EADSY  ) , which lost out to Boeing on the next-generation tanker bid in 2011. While Boeing's low bid may mean that the first deliveries of KC-46s make little money, EADS' American rival is set to win out in the long term.
